So Many Cakes

I am so far behind in updating our blog, but we have been working on the website and trying to get it up and running. For someone who is not computer savvy, it's taking me awhile! Fortunately we have friends that know what they are doing!

So here are some cakes we have done the last few weeks.

This first one was so special and one of the best deliveries I've had! I have been wanting to take our business into the community and somehow use our passion and love for cakes/desserts to give back. An opportunity of sorts fell into my lap a few weeks ago, where we provided a pretty cool cake for a special little boy and his family. We also brought cupcakes and sugar cookies for the kids at the After School center he belongs to. He was so excited to have his own cake and even more excited that it was ALL Chocolate cake with Chocolate Fudge Buttercream!

Here's the cake:

Another really fun cake we had was a Carnival Cruise Cake. This was a cake for a gal turning 50 and her family was surprising her with a Cruise next month. It was fun to have the cake be a part of the big reveal and from what the clients said, she was so excited about the cruise and the cake!!

The cake was Chocolate with Kahlua Espresso Cream Cheese

Finally, this one is of a wedding cake we did a couple of weeks ago. The bride sent me a picture of a cake she had found, so we change some things up a bit.

The bottom tier: Buttermilk Cake with Buttercream
Middle Tier: Chocolate Cake with Bittersweet Ganache, Oreos, White Chocolate Mousse filling
Top Tier: Buttermilk Cake with Almond Buttercream and Salted Caramel

Ruffles, Ruffles, Ruffles

I wanted to try out a new technique and got the perfect opportunity on this birthday cake. They wanted something fuchsia and girly. So I colored some fondant a beautiful fuchsia color and created these layered ruffles out of gumpaste and kept the cake clean and simple. I'm really happy with the way the ruffles came out and will definitely use them in future cakes.

Hope you like it!

Robot Cake

Unfortunately for this cake we didn't get too many good pictures...but this little guy turned out so cute, that I wanted to share at least this one picture.

He is completely edible and is made up of Buttermilk cake with White Chocolate Mousse filling and fresh strawberries.

Topsy Turvy Cake

This past weekend we created a Topsy Turvy cake. They are a lot of work to create, but so worth it in the end and look so much fun! This one was created for a little girl who turned 3 and was having a Mad Hatter Tea Party. We created the cake to be bright, fun, and whimsical. I was really happy with the way the design and colors all came out.

The cake was 3 tiers, each tier a different flavor.

1st tier: Buttermilk cake with Buttercream
2nd tier: Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting
3rd tier: Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese frosting

Some Extra Desserts

As much as I enjoy creating fun and special cakes, I still get so much enjoyment out of baking simple, delicious, comforting sweets. Here are some pictures of some simple treats I made this last week.

Fudge Brownies...All you need is a nice tall glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee!

Rustic Cake for a friend.....Buttermilk cake with Lemon Curd filling and frosted with Coconut Cream Cheese frosting.

Also, I have been trying out some new recipes for our Mini Dessert Menu...basically taking some of my favorite desserts and seeing how they work out when creating them bite-size. One of my favorite pies is a Rich Chocolate Mousse pie with Chocolate Crumble crust and topped with Kahlua Espresso Whipped Cream.

R2D2 Cake

One of our first cakes we made was for our son's birthday and he requested an R2D2 cake. We had a great time creating it and we had the honor of creating one again for a birthday boy who LOVES Star Wars. This one turned out great and we were able to get so much more detail on it and it looked amazing. It was a lot of fun delivering this cake and seeing his eyes light up!

The cake was Buttermilk with Pastry Cream and fresh strawberries. The arms were made up of rice krispy treats.

Von Dutch Tattoo and 1949 Mercury Cake

This cake was created for a client whos brother has a Von Dutch style tattoo and loves old cars. We incorporated both of these things into his birthday cake. The tattoo and car were each hand painted onto gumpaste and they turned out amazing!

The cake was Chocolate with Peanut Butter Mousse filling.

Wedding Cupcakes, Mini Desserts, Groom's Cake

We had the honor of providing desserts for an amazing couple this past weekend. I absolutely adore them and the bride was incredible to work with!

The wedding was held at Seascape in Aptos, so the delivery was pretty intense, but everything made it there in one piece, except our cupcake stand topper...but we had an extra cake stand, so it all worked out ok!

We created an assortment of cupcakes, a small topper cake, a grooms cake, and several dozen mini desserts. I loved the finished look, it all came together beautifully.

The cupcakes were an assortment of:

Cookies-n-Cream
Buttermilk with Raspberry Buttercream
Chocolate with Raspberry Buttercream
Buttermilk with Pastry Cream filling and Coconut Cream Cheese frosting
Chocolate with Kahlua Cream Cheese frosting

The Mini Desserts were:

Lemon Drops with Lemon Whipped Cream
Red Velvet Cake Pops

The Topper cake had handmade sugar roses on the top and side and we created a Chicago Cubs hat, since the groom is a huge fan. They had a game that night and won...so good vibes for the married couple!

Enjoy:

Wizard of Oz cake

It was a very crazy and busy week...but I feel incredibly blessed and excited to see our business and hard work paying off.

There are going to be a ton of pictures....but so worth looking at!

The first cake from this weekend was a Wizard of Oz cake, created for a birthday girl who loves the movie.

This cake has to be the most time consuming and hardest cake we have made! I absolutely love it and am so happy with the way it turned out.

All the characters are hand-made by my partner, my incredibly talented husband. We wanted to keep it as authentic as we could and really bring the essence of the movie into the cake.

The shoes were made with gumpaste and each sequin was cut out and glued on. Tedious work, but in the end it totally payed off!

I hope you enjoy looking at this cake as we had creating it. Sorry for some poor shots....I think our camera is nearing its end.

Curious George Cake

Curious George was a popular little guy this month! We had another George cake to create for a little guy who was turning 2.

This was a much simpler and smaller cake then the first one we did. I love the simplicity of it and of course Kyle did an amazing job hand painting and drawing George.

The cake was Vanilla with Vanilla Buttercream and fresh strawberries

Pool Cake

We created another pool cake, unfortunately we forgot to get pictures of the pool, but we also created a little snack shack, which turned out so cute!

The cake was Vanilla cake with White Chocolate Mousse filling and fresh strawberries.

Minnie Mouse cake

This cake was created for a little girl who was turning 3. She specifically asked for a Minnie cake with a purple bow. Minnie turned out super cute!

She was Chocolate cake with White Chocolate Mousse filling and fresh strawberries. Her nose was made out of rice krispy and her ears were cardboard covered in fondant.

Apple Caramel Toffee Bites

Our new FAVORITE mini dessert! I love coming up with new mini desserts and taking some of my favorite sweets and figuring out a way to make them bite size.

After testing out a couple of different caramel recipes, I finally found one that was thick enough to coat and not too sweet.

This mini dessert is the perfect ratio of apple to caramel and is just delicious. Takes you back to the days of going to the boardwalk and getting a big juicy caramel apple. To top if off, you end the bite with some crunch from the toffee bits around the bottom of the apple. This has become a fan favorite!

The picture doesn't do it justice....

Sugar Roses ~ A Gardner's Cake

A couple of weeks ago we created a cake for a client who's mom was turning 90! They wanted to create a cake that would best represent her love of gardening and in the words of the client "My mom's elegance."

I hope we acheived this in the cake, we had a lot of fun creating it and seeing all the elements come together.

The cake was 3 tiered (the 3rd tier is the top of the sun hat).

It was a Vanilla Lemon cake with Lemon Cream filling.

We created hand-made sugar roses, a gumpaste flower basket, sun hat, and sugar gloves. I think it came out beautifully, especially the basket!

Enjoy~

Giants Baseball Hat Cake ~ Batter Up

We finally got commissioned to create a baseball hat cake! While Kyle would have loved it to be a Yankees hat, this was for my step-dad who is a big Giants fan, so always make the customer happy!

The entire cake is edible, it's a Chocolate cake with White Chocolate Mousse and fresh strawberries...delicious.

The birthday boys magic number!

Curious George cake and Cupcakes

A few weeks back we created a first birthday cake for a client who's little girl LOVES Curious George.

This cake was so much fun to create and see it all come together!

Everything on this cake is edible! Kyle hand painted all the furniture pieces on the bottom tier, hand painted the palm trees on the top tier, and hand-drew and painted Curious George and the balloons!! It came out just as we wanted, colorful, fun, and definately screamed George!

We took one of the scenes from the Curious George book where he paints the covered furniture in a room as animals and creates a whole jungle look.

We also created cupcakes for the guest to take home as favors and hand made each of the toppers that went with the cupcakes.

The cake was all Chocolate with our Chocolate Ganache, Oreos, and White Chocolate Mousse filling. We also created a small smash cake for the birthday girl!

The cupcakes were Chocolate with Buttercream and Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting.

Enjoy! I have to THANK Lindsey from BellaLu Photography again, she swung by and took some great pictures as we were in the middle of finishing the cake. Unforunately we were finishing this cake to the last minute, so she was unable to get some pictures of it completely finished, but our clients were kind enough to send us some pictures from the party.

We created some Yellow Hats, Bananas, and Curious George faces as toppers for the cupcake favors

Bunco! Dice Cake

A great friend of ours celebrated her birthday by throwing a BUNCO party. For those of you who don't know what BUNCO is...basically it's a dice game that you play with at least 12 people and when you roll a 3 of a kind and depending on what number you are on from 1-6, you yell BUNCO! It's a ton of fun and we had a great time.

So we thought what was more appropriate for her then to make 3 little dice cakes and her favorite colors are black and pink.

Each cake was a different flavor:

Chocolate with Pastry Cream and fresh bananas

Buttermilk Cake with Chocolate Ganache and Salted Caramel

Chocolate Cake with Espresso Kahlua Cream Cheese frosting

Mini Desserts

Creating a Mini Dessert bar is one of my favorite menus to come up with. I love mini desserts, one small bite of goodness and then you move on to the next little bite. You can create such a fun look, colors, textures, smells, taste, and satisfy all palates. Here are some pictures of a couple of mini desserts spreads that we created the last couple of weeks for our church.

The menu(s) had the following:

Mini Banana cupcakes with Coconut Cream Cheese frosting

Rice Krispy treats with M&Ms and Chocolate dipped

Buttermilk, Chocolate, and Red Velvet Cake Pops

Toffee Crunch Brownie Bites

Mini Lemon Bars

Sugar Cookies

Mini Key Lime Pies with Homemade Graham Cracker Crust

Oatmeal Toffee Crunch Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mini Oreo Cupcakes

Caramel-Toffee Apple Bites

Here are some pictures

Wedding Celebration ~ Cupcakes

~Cupcakes Galore~

A california bride who recently got married in Cape Town, came home for a wedding celebration with all her California family and friends. Since they had cupcakes at their wedding, she wanted to re-create that for the California reception.

The cupcake flavors were:

Red Velvet (the bride and grooms favorite) with White Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting

Chocolate with Coconut Cream Cheese frosting

Buttermilk cake with Chocolate Ganache frosting

We made some sugar flowers for the Buttermilk cupcakes and some sugar "W" to represent the couples new last name!

I also tried out a new recipe for this week.....delicious!

Buttermilk cupcake with Almond Buttercream, Salted Caramel and topped with toasted Almonds

Bird of Paradise Cake with Green Tea....yum!

We had the honor of creating a fun colorful cake for a beautiful birthday girl! She loves the flower Bird of Paradise and Green Tea. So I got to try out a new recipe and was really happy with the way it turned out.

The cake was a vanilla cake with a Jasmine Green Tea wash and filled with Green Tea Cream Cheese frosting. It was sweet, light, and had a wonderful nutty Green Tea flavor with a hint of the Jasmine. I would recommend this flavor to anyone who is a Green Tea fan!

The cake itself turned out gorgeous, with fun bright colors and amazing depth!

Enjoy.....

The frosting....

Filled and ready for some carving, we wanted to make it a tall column shape, something a little different.

The finished cake...

Red Velvet and Mini Lemon Drops

It's so fun taking surprise sweets to people! I love the reactions and delight in their voices when they see a variety of desserts sitting and waiting to be devoured. I took some cupcakes and Mini Lemon Drops to more of the nurses and doctors at Kaiser last week and they were enjoyed by all!

Red Velvet Cupcakes with Coconut Cream Cheese frosting and a small fondant rose

Mini Lemon Drops with Lemon Whipped Cream.

I also did some Chocolate Cupcakes with Kahlua Espresso Cream Cheese frosting, but forgot to take pictures.

Disney Cake and Sandbox Cake

We had several fun cakes this weekend and one of our more challenging one was the Disney cake that we created for a little girl turning 2.

Each character was hand drawn and painted onto gumpaste and I thought they came out amazing! The cake was girly, fun, and simple since we wanted each of the characters to be the main focus on the cake.

The bottom tier was Chocolate cake filled with White/Dark Chocolate Ganache and oreos. The middle tier was Buttermilk cake with Raspberry Meringue Filling and the top tier was Chocolate cake filled with Kahlua Espresso Cream Cheese frosting.

Sorry for the poor pictures, we were down to the wire to get this cake delivered...so it was pretty rushed.

The other cake was a blast to create and it came out great! This client wanted something fun and playful for her friend who was celebrating her birthday, so she asked for a sandbox cake.

The pail and shovel are made of gumpaste and I decorated the pail with some fun jewels to brighten it up. The sandcastle was created out of rice krispy and sprinkled with our edible sand (brown sugar, graham cracker crumbs, and raw sugar). The wood slats for the sandbox were created out of fondant and then hand painted to give a wood effect.

The cake was homemade Funfetti, Vanilla cake with sprinkles and filled with Chocolate Mousse Buttercream.

Dino-Mite Cake

We had several birthdays this past weekend...one of which was a Dinosaur theme, so of course we had to create a Dinosaur.

Everything is cake, except his head, which was made out of rice krispy treats. He was covered in fondant and then airbrushed.

White Chocolate Vanilla Cake with White/Dark Chocolate Ganache filling and fresh strawberries.

I also did some Sugar cookies for the guest to take as favors.

Butterflies, Flowers, Mini Desserts

This past weekend we celebrated a very special little girl's 3rd birthday and I was so excited to do the desserts. Her mom, my good friend Lindsey from BellaLu Photography gave me full reign.

We wanted to do a small cake for the birthday girl, so we went with Chocolate cake with the ever so popular Chocolate Ganache and Oreo filling.
We decorated with beautiful bright green fondant and added gumpaste butterflies and flowers. I loved the way the cake looked and she adored it!

For the mini desserts I wanted a nice array of flavors, textures, and colors. The menu included:

Mini Chocolate cupcakes with a Bittersweet Chocolate Ganache and Kahlua frosting
Mini Cheesecakes with Toasted Hazelnut Crust and topped with fresh fruit
Vanilla Bean Sugar Cookies
Chocolate Cups with Peanut Butter Mousse (the crowd favorite!)

Enjoy.....

Thank you BellaLu Photography for the awesome pictures!

Sweet Sixteen

I had the privilege of creating a special Sweet Sixteen Birthday cake for an awesome client! The requests for the cake was girly, bright colors, and to somehow incorporate some converse shoes and a basketball...this paticular 16 year is an amazing basketball player, but also loves to be the princess!

The cake was my version on Funfetti (since I don't use box mixes and that is her favorite cake), so I made a Vanilla cake and added some bright pink sprinkles to the batter. It was filled with Swiss Meringue Buttercream and fresh strawberries....I heard she loved it!

Cupcakes

A very sweet couple ordered some cupcakes to celebrate their anniversary a couple of weekends ago. They are huge lemon fans, so they wanted the Buttermilk Cupcakes filled with Lemon curd and topped with Coconut Cream Cheese frosting. As a little touch I made some sugar Calla Lillies since that is what she had used in her bouquet.

They also ordered some mini lemon drops, but I didn't take any pictures...scroll down to see those.

I also made some of the most delicious and messy cupcakes for a friend's birthday. Vanilla Cookies and Cream Cupcakes.

Vanilla cupcakes with crushed oreos and topped with a sweet Buttercream frosting and heavily decorated with more crushed oreos....yum!

Cakes, Cakes, Babies, Birthdays...and more!

This was a busy weekend...which is a huge blessing!

This cake was for a baby shower and my client specifically asked for the converse shoes that we had done on a previous cake. We added a couple of cake cars decorated in fondant too.

I had some trouble with the heat and cracking fondant, but overall the cake turned out super cute, you can't ever predict the weather and how your cake is going to react, but the cake was a lot of fun to make!

The bottom tier was Chocolate cake with Kahlua cream cheese frosting and the top tier was a Buttermilk cake with White Chocolate cream cheese frosting and fresh strawberries.

This next cake was for a client who's only request was make it pink and make it girly! Well, nothing says girly to me more then bright pink, crystals, and some rhinestones....

More from this past weekend coming up soon....

Red Velvets

I did a small order for a Red Velvet cake with White Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting. The only request for the order was to have purple in the decorations, so I iced the cake with Swiss Meringue Buttercream and accented it with purple dots and found this beautiful huge purple flower!

I love fresh flowers on cakes....simple and elegant!

Since this cake was so small, I had left over cake, so I decided to try out a new design. Melody from Sweet and Saucy posted this gorgeous simple cake and later did a tutorial on how she did it. I loved the way it turned out, some rough spots, but for the first time trying it out, I was pretty happy with it! I think it would be easier to do on a slightly larger cake.

'72 Chevy Nova

A friend of ours celebrated his 30th birthday last weekend, so as his gift we recreated his "baby" a 1972 Chevy Nova in cake! His wife then surprised him by towing the car from his childhood home in Colorado to California for his big day! So much fun to surprise him with the cake, and even better with the real deal!

The cake was Chocolate with Raspberry Meringue and Chocolate ganache filling.
